Why We Built a Mid-Drive Motor Instead of a Hub Motor | TAV Systems

When people first discover electric bikes, one question often comes up.

Why does TAV focus on mid-drive motors instead of hub motors?

Hub motors are the most common electric bike motors in the market. They sit inside the wheel and directly spin it.

They are simple and easy to install which is why many entry-level electric bikes use them. But when we started working on electric bicycles, we were interested in something different. We wanted the ride to feel natural like a bicycle, not like a small electric motorcycle.

That curiosity led us toward mid-drive technology for electric bicycle.

How a Mid-Drive System Works

A mid-drive motor sits in the center of the bicycle, near the crank where the pedals cranks are. Instead of spinning the wheel directly, the motor delivers power through the bicycle’s drivetrain.

This means the motor works together with the bicycle’s gears just like the rider does. The result is a riding experience that feels much more balanced and responsive.

When climbing hills, the motor can use the gears to produce more torque. When cruising on flat roads, it can shift to higher gears and ride efficiently whereas the hub motor doesn't have this advantage.

Why We Believe Mid-drive ebikes are the Better Ride

For everyday riders, the difference becomes clear once they ride a mid-drive bike.

The weight of the motor sits in the middle of the bicycle which improves balance. The bike feels stable when turning and riding at speed. Because the motor uses the gears, it can deliver strong torque for climbing hills or carrying cargo.

This is especially useful for commuters, delivery riders and people riding in cities with slopes. It also means the bicycle still feels like a bicycle — the rider and the machine working together.

Why TAV Focuses on Powertrain Technology

At TAV, we believe the powertrain is the heart of electric mobility.

That is why we spent years developing our mid-drive motor platform and the control systems that make it work smoothly.

Our goal is not just to build electric bikes but to build the technology that powers them.

By focusing on the motor, controller and drivetrain integration, we aim to create systems that are efficient, reliable and enjoyable to ride.

Because in the end, the best technology is the one you forget is there, it simply makes the ride better.

Today, TAV is the only deep tech micro-mobility company that develop and manufacture electric bicycle technology in India with the backing of Australian innovation and research.
